For 20 years, The Design Team has been one of Central Minnesota’s premier home design specialists. From young families and first time buyers to older couples looking to downsize, The Design Team works with homeowners, contractors, lumberyards and realtors to develop original residential designs.
“We design homes to fit our client’s lifestyle,” says designer Tricia Peters. “Everyone is different. Every home is different. It’s important for us to always focus on the client and to listen to what they’re saying.”
Within five years of its founding, The Design Team employed a staff of 11, including designers, drafters and an office manager. When the 2008 recession hit, however, they fell to four employees. Now, The Design Team is comprised of seven women — each of whom add a unique touch to creative home design.
“We all get along really well,” manager and designer Betsy Rakotz says. “It’s easy to communicate and we really work as a team. Every day, there’s questions flying around and everyone is open to offering an opinion.”
Since The Design Team completes nearly 1,000 projects each year, Betsy says it’s important for the team to work efficiently and communicate effectively.
“There are so many different markets that we have to understand,” Betsy says. “We know what needs to happen, so we take a lot of time to interview clients up front in order to provide their home needs.”
Guiding you to your dream home
In the beginning stages, designers from The Design Team sit down with their client for an information-gathering meeting.
“What’s more important than your home?” Tricia says. “It’s about how we can be a part of making it an enjoyable place to be.”
The Design Team discusses architectural style, square footage, lot requirements and budget with their client. After the initial consultation meeting, the designer will provide an estimate and go over the design strategy. Once the client approves the design, The Design Team prepares final construction documents.
“We’ve been doing this a long time so it’s become second nature to us,” Betsy says. “We like to think globally about the house. There are a lot of aspects to putting together a home and it takes a lot of skill and knowledge to do that.”
Since the building codes and complexity of homes have become more stringent, their team understands the importance of putting the customer first.
“As a homeowner coming to us, you are in control of the plan,” Tricia says. “Making our clients feel comfortable is part of our process of listening. We figure it all out in the planning stages. You learn a lot about people.”
Changing of the times
Depending on a client’s desired level of design, The Design Team uses new technologies like 3D drafting, visual walk- throughs and a virtual reality system as methods for clients to get a clearer picture of the home they envision.
“The Design Team is a good choice for your home design because we care about you. With 20 years of experience we are efficient, creative and affordable. Remember, good design doesn’t cost; it pays” Betsy says.
From start to finish, The Design Team provides clients with the tools to design their dream home.

The Design Team offers St. Cloud and surrounding areas stunning home plans in a variety of styles. This month we are focusing on a feature no one can ever have too much of…storage! For starters, let's talk closets. There are two main styles of built-in closets: lineal, or reach-in, and walk-in. Walk-in closets typically start at about 5’x5’ and can be as large as space allows. These can include a standard single rod and shelf, or possibly two rows of rod and shelf; closet organizers, and/ or shelving. Walk-in closets are popular in master suites, often including a stackable washer and dryer or ironing board for convenience. Modern designs may creatively incorporate sleek built-ins in lieu of a walk-in closet. The Design Team loves innovative designs as much as the classics, or any combination of both. Closet organizer companies are also increasingly popular and The Design Team can make some great recommendations! Built-ins are also great for the mudroom area and may include lockers, cubbies, benches, walk-in or reach-in closets. Looking for seasonal storage? Storage under stairwells? The Design Team can draft any of these into your home plans. Finally, think exterior storage. We design everything from sheds and garages to garage extensions that include storage—perhaps storage trusses built into your roof space and accessible by ladder, or pull-down stairs. Attic trusses can also add extra storage or even living space. Your options are endless! We have designs for all seasons at The Design Team. Call today for your free consultation (320) 252-1517.

The Design Team offers St. Cloud and surrounding areas stunning home plans in a variety of styles. This month we are focusing on a key feature in home design: porch styles!
Open air porches are covered porches, typically in the front of the house, giving it curb appeal. They dress up the front of your home, can be used for lounging and grilling, and support columns can add functionality to your form.
Screen porches have summer appeal! Enjoy the outdoors without all the harsh rays and bugs. Screen porches expand your living space, and help bring the outdoors in. They are ideal for relaxation any time of day.
3-season porches are unheated, but may have windows as well as screens. Typically they will have an exterior door between the porch and your living space. With insulation and another heat source, a 3-season porch may be enjoyed longer, or converted to a 4-season porch over time.
4-season sunrooms are a step above porches, offering a heated space with lots of windows that can be enjoyed all year round. These rooms are great for relaxation, serving as a retreat for those who enjoy sunshine, and range from smaller size to as large as your great room …the choices are endless! Sunrooms typically extend off the back of the home, with south side orientation being ideal. They can extend off the dining or living room if you choose.

The Design Team offers St. Cloud and all other areas beautiful home plans in an endless variety of styles. If you are looking for a classic design that maintains popularity to this day, you may want to consider our Style of the Month...the Dutch Colonial.
Contrary to what is commonly believed, the Dutch Colonial style did not originate in Holland. It originated with Dutch settlers starting at about the early 1700s. The profile of the Dutch Colonial often makes it referred to as a barn house. Its gambrel-roofed style on the upper level allowed it to be classified as a single-story home, which helped for tax purposes. It shares some characteristics with the Colonial Revival style, including symmetry, siding, and windows.
- symmetrical in front
- Dutch door or 6-panel door
- double-hung windows
- small panes of glass
- 6" lap siding
- wood shingles
- chimney not in center
- gambrel roof
- top roof 5/12
- sides of roof 20/12
- small overhang on roof
- second floor smaller than first
- dormers (shed or gable)
- corner boards
- small garage doors 9X7
- 9" to 12" overhang
- very little overhang on gable ends
Call the Design Team today to discuss whether the Dutch Colonial may be the perfect design for you! Always remember the Design Team has our Designers are on staff to tweak any design and make any variations you want to explore. We look forward to meeting you!
